This balanced, chocolatey, and juicy Kenya coffee comes from western Embu County in Kenya’s central province. It is produced by the Rianjagi Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), a single-factory society with over 2,300 members, each farming an average of just a quarter of an acre.
Embu County shares the high elevation, mineral-rich volcanic soils, and favorable climate of nearby Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties. While less known for its top-quality coffees, Embu boasts excellent farmers and cooperatives with a long history of coffee production, including some of Kenya’s first cooperative unions before independence in 1963.
Rianjagi FCS, established in 1976, processes coffee from all its members at a single factory. The coffee is meticulously sorted, depulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised tables with careful temperature control to ensure consistent quality. Once dried, it is conditioned on-site and prepared for milling, where it is sorted by grade for roasters.
